Japan Luggage Forwarding, Coin Lockers, or Shinkansen Storage: Which Should You Use?

A practical decision guide for Japan luggage forwarding, same-day airport delivery, coin lockers, and oversized baggage rules on the Tokaido, Sanyo, and Kyushu Shinkansen.

The simplest decision

Travelers often search for “Japan luggage forwarding” as if it is one service. In practice, you are choosing between four different problems:

Hotel-to-hotel forwarding

This is the option most people mean when they say “luggage forwarding in Japan.” Yamato’s English FAQ says hotel-to-hotel delivery is possible if the sending and receiving hotels can handle Yamato baggage at the front desk. It also says to send the baggage so that it arrives at the destination accommodation at least one day before your stay.

That one-day buffer is the point. Do not plan to forward the suitcase in the morning and need it that same night in another city unless the hotel or counter confirms the exact service.

Same-day airport delivery

Same-day delivery is useful when your flight arrives early and your hotel check-in is hours away.

Yamato’s same-day service page gives examples such as sending baggage from a Haneda Airport counter to a hotel in Tokyo’s 23 wards, and from Kyoto Station to Kyoto city. It also warns that fees, drop-off cut-off times, and arrival times vary by counter and destination.

JAL’s same-day luggage delivery page lists a simple price of JPY 4,500 per baggage, with hotel delivery by 10:00 p.m.. The same JAL page lists different airport cut-off times and service areas: for example, Haneda and Narita serve Tokyo’s 23 wards and Urayasu, while Kansai Airport serves Osaka City and Kyoto City.

Coin lockers and staffed storage

Coin lockers are best for short gaps: before check-in, after check-out, or during a day trip. They are not the best answer for changing cities with large suitcases.

Yamato’s Hands-Free Travel page explains why: stations and trains can be crowded, and large lockers at stations may be full. Staffed luggage storage counters can solve that, but they still depend on location and opening hours.

Use storage when the bag is a same-day problem. Use forwarding when the bag is a multi-city problem.

Shinkansen oversized baggage rules

On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen, JR Central explains that baggage with total dimensions between 161 cm and 250 cm requires a reservation for an oversized baggage space. If you bring oversized baggage without the required reservation, JR Central lists a 1,000 yen carry-on fee.

Small and medium baggage up to 160 cm total dimensions can usually go in the overhead rack, at your feet, or in deck storage areas where available.

What I would do

For a first Japan trip, the practical setup is simple:

1. Travel with one smaller suitcase if possible.
2. Use same-day airport delivery only if you land early and your hotel is in the listed area.
3. Use hotel-to-hotel forwarding before long train days.
4. Keep one overnight backpack with medicine, chargers, passport, and one change of clothes.
5. Reserve oversized Shinkansen baggage space if your suitcase is over 160 cm total dimensions.

Bottom line

Do not carry a huge suitcase through every station just because it is technically possible. Japan has good luggage services, but each one solves a different problem.

If you are moving between hotels, forward it. If you are killing time before check-in, store it. If you are riding the Shinkansen with oversized baggage, reserve the right seat.
