Sending Luggage to the Airport in Japan: It Must Arrive the Day Before
Airport takkyubin is not a same-day service. Your bag has to reach the airport counter the day before you fly, and you collect it in a narrow window before boarding. The deadlines, in English.
The mistake that ruins the last day
The service is usually described in English as “send your luggage to the airport”, which sounds like something you do on your way out. It is not.
The bag must already be at the airport counter the day before you fly. If you hand it over on the morning of departure, it will not be there when you arrive.
The two deadlines

The collection window is the part travellers underestimate. One hour before boarding is the latest, not the earliest. Arriving at the counter forty minutes before your flight is too late, even though you are technically still on time for the gate.
Working backwards
Transit time depends on the distance, so the posting date is not fixed. Working backwards from a Tuesday flight:
- Bag reaches the airport: Monday
- You hand it over: Sunday, or Saturday from somewhere distant
- Online pickup booked by: 16:00 on the day of collection
What this is good for, and what it is not

For moving bags between hotels as you travel, ordinary takkyubin is the better tool and far more flexible. Airport takkyubin solves one specific problem: getting a large case to your departure airport ahead of you.
If you have left it too late
Then use coin lockers or a station luggage-storage counter for the final day, and take the bag to the airport yourself. It is the ordinary answer, and on the last day it is usually the only one that still works.
